Forty-eight thousand dollars is a lot of money until you consider the physics of a nine-foot piece of solid oak traveling from a climate-controlled factory to a residential driveway in a suburbs-reach of Seattle. Three different trucks will carry that box. Two different forklifts will pierce the air around it. At some point, in a cross-docking facility in Nebraska, a tired operator will tilt a pallet just three degrees too far to the left, and twenty-four pounds of precision-milled wood will slide toward a single point of contact.
The decision made for thirty-one cents in March becomes the reason a man stands in his garage in April, holding a crowbar and staring at a crushed corner.
The Integrity of Objects
I spent most of last Tuesday untangling a massive ball of Christmas lights. It was outside, and the humidity made my shirt stick to the small of my back, but I had this sudden, irrational need for order. People in my line of work-I’ve spent managing a prison library-tend to get obsessive about the integrity of objects.
If a book comes back with a dog-eared corner, it’s a tiny tragedy. If the spine is cracked, the system has failed. In a prison, you learn that the “container” is often more important than the content because the container is what preserves the peace.

I think back to my Christmas lights. Why was I untangling them in ? Because I knew that if I waited until , the frustration of the knots would ruin the joy of the lights. I was investing time now to protect an experience later.
If a design doesn’t account for the three-truck journey, it isn’t a complete design. It’s just an unfinished dream in a fragile box.
We talk a lot about “cutting-edge” design, but we rarely talk about the edges themselves. In the world of interior slats, the edge is everything. It’s the transition point between the wall and the ceiling. It’s the line that defines the corner. If that line is soft, or dented, or “close enough,” the whole illusion of custom millwork vanishes. You’re left with a DIY project that looks like a DIY project.
When you choose a panel that is built to be cut, leveled, and fastened-a real material-you are making a commitment to the craft. It’s only fair that the manufacturer makes the same commitment to the crate.
